How to grow your business for free with Google Business Profile (Google My Business)
When someone near you types “caterer in Port Harcourt” or “best hair salon near me” into Google, a map with three businesses appears before anything else. Those three get the calls, the WhatsApp messages and the walk-ins. Getting into that map costs nothing. This guide shows you how.
Quick note on the name: Google My Business is now called Google Business Profile. It is the same free listing. Most people still search for “Google My Business”, so you will see both names in this article.
What is a Google Business Profile?
It is the free listing that shows your business on Google Search and Google Maps: your name, address or service area, phone number, opening hours, photos, reviews and a link to your website or WhatsApp. You do not need a website to have one. For many small businesses in Nigeria, it works as a free mini-website that shows up exactly when a customer is ready to buy.
Why it works so well for small businesses
- It catches people who are ready to buy. Someone searching “generator repair near me” needs it today, not next month.
- It is free. No ad spend, no monthly fee.
- It builds trust. Real photos and real reviews convince people faster than anything you write about yourself.
- It puts a call button right on the listing. Customers can call you, get directions or open your website in one tap.
Step 1: Claim your profile
- Search for your business name on Google. If it already appears with a “Claim this business” option, use that.
- If not, search “Google Business Profile” and click Manage now, then add your business.
- Sign in with a Gmail account. Use one you control long term. Do not use a staff member's personal email.
- Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your shop sign or brand. Do not stuff it with keywords.
Step 2: Choose the right category
Your primary category is one of the biggest signals Google uses to decide which searches you show up for. Be specific. “Caterer” beats “Food business”. “Hair salon” beats “Beauty”. You can add a few secondary categories for other things you do.
Step 3: Add your location or service area
If customers come to you, add your shop address. If you travel to customers, such as a plumber, photographer or cleaner, you can set a service area instead and hide your home address. Make sure the pin on the map is in the right place, because it is how people find you.
Step 4: Verify your business
Google needs to confirm that you really own the business. Depending on your business, you may be offered a phone call or SMS, an email, a short video of your premises, or a postcard with a code. Choose the method Google shows you and follow the prompts. Your profile does not appear properly in search until you finish this step, so do not skip it. If you get stuck, Google's own verification help page explains each option.
Step 5: Fill in every section
Complete profiles look more trustworthy and give Google more to match to searches. Fill in:
- Phone number you actually answer, plus your WhatsApp link if you take orders there.
- Opening hours, including public holidays. Wrong hours lose customers and reviews.
- Services or products with short descriptions and, where you can, prices.
- Business description: say what you do, who you serve and where, in plain words.
- Website link, if you have one.
Step 6: Add real photos
Photos of your shop front, your team, your products and your finished work do more than any caption. Use your own phone photos in good light. Avoid stock images. Add a few new photos every week or two, because an active profile looks like a business that is open and working.
Step 7: Collect reviews, then reply to every one
Reviews are the most powerful part of your profile. The simplest method: after you deliver a good service, send the customer a WhatsApp message with your review link.
You can copy your review link from your Business Profile by choosing the option to ask for reviews. Then:
- Reply to every review, positive or negative, within a day or two.
- For a bad review, stay calm, apologise where it is fair, and offer to fix it offline. Future customers read how you respond.
- Never buy or fake reviews. Google can remove them and may penalise your profile.
Step 8: Post updates regularly
You can share short updates on your profile, such as an offer, a new product, an event or a recent job. They take two minutes to write and keep your listing fresh. Aim for one a week.
Step 9: Check what is working
Your profile shows you how people found you and what they did: calls, direction requests and website clicks. Look at it once a month. If lots of people ask for directions but few call, make your phone number and hours clearer. If photos get views, add more.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Adding words like “Best Cheap Plumber Lagos” to your business name. This breaks Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.
- Using a fake address or a virtual office. Only list a location where your business really operates.
- Leaving the profile unverified.
- Ignoring reviews and messages.
- Letting your phone number or hours go out of date.
A 30-minute checklist to start today
- Claim or create your profile and start verification.
- Pick your primary category and two or three secondary ones.
- Add phone, WhatsApp link, hours and a clear description.
- Upload at least five real photos.
- Send your review link to your last five happy customers.
Google results can take time to build, and no listing guarantees a ranking. But a complete, active and well-reviewed profile gives you the best free chance of showing up when customers search for what you sell.
